One of the reasons to visit Brighton Dental regularly is so that we can detect cavities early. That means we can take care of small amounts of decay before they become big problems. And that means smaller fillings and less pain. With laser cavity detection, we can detect problems earlier and easier, saving you time, money and hassles – and saving your teeth from decay.
With the DIAGNOdent laser cavity detection aid, we can detect cavities sooner than ever before, allowing us to treat them more efficiently and with greater effectiveness – using advanced technology that’s less invasive and preserves more of the natural tooth. And this aid and the related procedures are recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the American Dental Association, so you can be sure it can be trusted.
Understanding The DIAGNOdent Laser
It’s very simple, really: The DIAGNOdent laser is a cavity detection tool that locates and assesses cavities based on the reflection of light shined on the teeth. First, a laser is shined on a particular tooth. This light bounces back from the tooth to the scanner. The device and its software determine whether the quality of the light indicates that a cavity or other issue is present in or on the tooth.
Fluorescence indicates that there is decay and that action is needed. Our team is alerted to any instances of florescence so we can tell what we’d like to do about. We get both audible and visual alerts from the device so we don’t miss a thing.
There’s absolutely no pain involved in using this cavity detection tool. In fact, using it may allow us to detect decay earlier and can prevent the necessity for large cavity repairs later, which can be more painful and less stable than smaller repairs.
The DIAGNOdent cavity detection tool releases special bursts of 655 nm wavelength light that passes entirely through each of your teeth, allowing it to see what we can’t. Of course, we can see a lot about whether you have cavities or not with our naked eyes, so this special tool will never completely replace an examination by Dr. Woods and our dental health team. But it helps us spot issues that we might not be able to see until much later down the road, and that helps us save you time, money, hassles and allows for smaller dental repairs rather than large ones in many cases.
If you already have a lot of crowns or fillings, we may not get good results using this tool. In that case, we have other tools and procedures at our disposal, including a simple dental examination, which is always your first line of defense against tooth decay and gum disease anyway.
How Laser Detection Helps
Here at Brighton Dental in San Diego, we like to use the laser cavity detection tool because it can find decay early – even earlier than x-rays. You see, x-rays can’t locate very small amounts of decay, but the DIAGNOdent tool can because it can show us contrast between hard and soft portions of the tooth.
Small cavities can then be treated with microabrasion instead of drilling, and that means less pain – and often no numbing is needed. Smaller fillings done in this way often look better than traditional fillings too.
The most important thing is that you come in and let us find out where you stand. If you have cavities or dental health issues, we have painless, simple and quick solutions in most cases.
