At Brighton Dental in San Diego, we’re pleased to be leaders in adopting new technology for the benefit of our patients and our practice. We’ve been using digital x-rays, which have become the industry-standard in radiography, for years. We get clear pictures with minimal hassles – and low exposure to radiation for you and for our staff.
And nothing is more important to diagnosing and properly treating tooth decay and other oral health issues than good x-rays.
Digital radiography replaces dental x-rays taken with film just as digital photography has replaced film photography. With digital x-rays, an electronic sensor instead of film captures and stores the image. Advantages include:
• Immediate viewing, so there’s no waiting for film to develop
• Enlargement and manipulation, so we can get a close look at problem areas
• As much as 80 to 90 percent less radiation than traditional x-rays.
Why Digital X-Rays Matter
X-rays provide essential details for our team to use in preventing and diagnosing dental and oral health issues, and digital radiography provides better information than old-fashioned images. We can find hidden abnormalities and plan for accurate treatment. Without these modern, painless and hassle-free images, we might miss something.
In fact, in addition to hidden tooth decay, dental x-rays can help us find:
• Developmental abnormalities
• Abscesses and cysts
• Bone loss
• Cancerous and noncancerous tumors
• Problems with teeth below the gum line
• Bad tooth root positioning
• And more.
Once you’ve had x-rays taken, Dr. Woods and our San Diego dental team will carefully review the images and perhaps use other diagnostic tools to determine the exact nature of anything out of the ordinary that we see. Then, we’ll propose a treatment plan for you. At Brighton Dental, no matter how you’re diagnosed, the final approval for treatment always comes from you. You’re totally in charge of any treatment you need from start to finish.
How Digital X-Rays Are Better For You
We’re all exposed to small amounts of radiation in our normal lives. Today’s digital x-rays use much less radiation than old-fashioned dental imaging, and that’s better for you. Plus, they’re quicker and more comfortable. Additionally, no harmful developing chemicals are needed that can harm the environment and there’s nothing extra to throw away.
To further protect you from radiation, we put a shield over the rest of your body and only take x-rays we need and never more. How many images we take and how often depends on the specifics of your dental health and any conditions you may have, and we’ll tell you when we need new x-rays. For new patients, we always start with a full set of x-rays, which may include a panoramic x-ray that also shows your jaw and sinuses. We may not need new x-rays for 3 to 5 years if you don’t have any problems.
Clear images of any problems mean we’re better able to see what we need to do and how we should do it. When we see problems early, take action quickly and preserve as much of your natural teeth and tissue as possible, we’re improving your oral health and your overall health. We’re a holistic dental practice and believe your dental issues can be interrelated with other health concerns, and overall better health is possible through good oral health.
