If you’ve been experiencing health problems of any kind, your teeth, gums and mouth could be to blame. Similarly, dental and oral health issues can weaken your body and be the source of infection that spreads, impacting your overall health. At Brighton Dental in San Diego, we’re a holistic dental practice and take the big picture into account when dealing with your oral health.
Your journey toward living a better, healthier life could start with a dental exam and cleaning. It’s the first thing we do for any new patient, and it’s the first thing we do for returning patients who come for routine checkups as well.
What A Dental Exam Involves
At Brighton, we’re a gentle dental practice and focus on making everything easy and pain-free. Your pleasant, comfortable dental exam includes these things:
X-rays. Our modern digital x-rays are more comfortable than ever, take less time than in the past and can help us detect cysts, tumors, bone loss and decay as well. We can also make sure teeth and roots are properly positioned with x-rays.
Oral cancer screening. This non-invasive and painless check involves examining the gums, lips, tongue, throat, neck and face and all related tissue for any evidence of oral cancer. Early detection provides the best hope for getting on top of the condition.
Gum disease evaluation. Not all signs of gum disease are evident to you, so we check the gums and the bone around your teeth for signs of gum or periodontal disease. Armed with an understanding of what’s wrong, we can propose a solution.
Tooth decay check. Most people who haven’t been to the dentist in a while have at least minor tooth decay. We check all tooth surfaces for decay using specially designed instruments that help us get up close to every surface.
Existing restorations check. Previous dental restorations don’t last forever, and we check your old restoration – including fillings, crowns, bridges and other work – for quality and to see if it has degraded or changed in any way over the years. If it has, we can propose a modern replacement.
A Thorough Cleaning Is The Next Step
Most often performed by one of our registered and experienced dental hygienists, a dental cleaning is called dental prophylaxis. Usually done at the same time as the exam, a dental cleaning includes the following vital services:
Tartar removal. Tartar is often called calculus and is plaque that has remained on the surface of the tooth long enough to harden and attach firmly. Formed both above the gum line and below, specialized instruments are necessary to remove it. You can never get at tartar with only a toothbrush.
Plaque removal. Nearly invisible and very sticky, plaque is a film that covers your teeth. This film includes live bacteria as well as saliva, food debris and more. It must be removed because it creates toxins – or poisons, if you prefer – that cause periodontal disease and inflame your gums. If you don’t get rid of plaque, a world of dental and oral health problems can result.
Teeth polishing. This necessary part of a professional teeth cleaning at Brighton Dental in San Diego involves scrubbing away stains, plaque and tartar that doesn’t come away during your regular brushing or the professional cleaning we do. Polishing also smooths the surfaces of your teeth to make them more resistant to plaque and tartar in the future.
