There is an argument among the dental community about amalgam fillings. Some so-called experts believe that when you mix harmful mercury with other ingredients including silver, it becomes stable and safe. For decades, this mixture called amalgam has been used in dental restorations. Now, this filling material has rightly fallen out of favor, but still many dentists use it – and many people have dangerous mercury-containing fillings in their teeth. It has to be removed for safety, according to many researchers and proven by a recent Dr. Oz show experiment.
Some countries have taken the smart step of banning mercury in fillings since this liquidy metal is a neurotoxin. That hasn’t happened yet in the United States, however.
For people with silver fillings, there’s reason for concern because these fillings could generate health problems you may not even realize are because of dental fillings. The only solution is to get rid of amalgam fillings and replace them with safe, modern restorations, including composite. That’s a service Brighton Dental San Diego and Dr. Paige Woods perform under careful protocols each day.
Where The ADA Won’t Act, Dr. Oz Does
Besides damaging your health with mercury fillings, you’re releasing into the atmosphere small amounts of mercury vapor each time you chew, brush or grind your teeth – and as the fillings degrade over time and from carbonated beverages. Mercury in the air converts to methylmercury that can contaminate fish. And it’s not just what’s in your mouth, it’s all the mercury that gets wasted at dental offices and disposed of improperly when removed. That’s why proper amalgam removal is so important.
Yet, the American Dental Association advocates dental amalgam nonetheless, not acknowledging the risks. Astoundingly, half of American dentists continue using mercury, according to research.
On Dr. Mehmet Oz’s television program, the doctor participated in an experiment demonstrating that mercury vapor is released from amalgam fillings. Working inside a closed container with air filtration and using gloved hands, Dr. Oz brushed a replica of an amalgam filling with a regular toothbrush. After just seconds, 61 micrograms of harmful mercury was present inside the previously clean-air container. If this had been inside a patient’s mouth, that mercury vapor from ordinary brushing could have easily penetrated into the brain where it can cause neurological effects.
See the demonstration on this video – beginning at about the 2-minute mark:
And remember this: People – perhaps like you – who have mercury fillings brush, grind and chew daily.
And what’s even more interesting: While some people have tried to refute the finding of the experiment, their only quibble is usually how much harm mercury does, not whether it does harm.
It’s true that mercury vapor doesn’t cause instant death or even immediate illness, but it has a cumulative impact. Perhaps Dr. Oz is not the world’s foremost dental expert, but the demonstration has been performed under careful controls but reputable dental organizations – including the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology – with the same result.
