At Brighton Dental in San Diego, we use Panorex panoramic x-rays to see the whole story of what’s going on with your teeth and face – without putting film in your mouth or performing an invasive procedure. These wraparound radiographic photos show what’s hidden beneath the tissue, including early-stage cavities, impacted wisdom teeth, fractures, bone loss and more.
The film is in the machine rather than in your mouth – and the machine simply rotates around the outside of your head instead of having to be aimed at a specific spot. Old-style x-rays – called bitewing x-rays – may still be needed in some cases, but panoramic x-rays can often tell a more complete story without the time-consuming and uncomfortable process of putting film in your mouth.
When we use our Panorex machine to get a complete look at your teeth, we can also see the sinuses, the nose, the nerves of the jaw and other nearby structures that may be involved in any pain or dental health issues you’re experiencing. This overall view can tell us if, for example, a sinus problem is the true cause of your tooth pain.
Diagnosing With Panoramic X-Rays
When we perform simple, quick and painless panoramic x-rays on your head and face, we can help you in the following ways:
• Check on the progression of TMD-related jaw problems and design a program to prevent further jaw damage in many cases
• Diagnose the cause of your overactive gag reflex so we can treat it
• Locate any cysts and other abnormalities and determine what treatment is necessary for them
• Take a look for impacted teeth that may be causing you pain
• Find fractures of the jawbone that could be resulting in problems speaking or chewing
• Plan for braces, implants or traditional dentures so that we get the job done as easily and painlessly as possible
• See the impacts of cavities and gum disease and start the process of reversing these problems
• And more.
And a panoramic x-ray couldn’t be simpler to complete. A rotating arm holds up the x-ray machine and film. You simply place your head in the designated position. We help you align it precisely in the right position for the machine to do its work. Magnified pictures inside your mouth, jaw and head are produced in minutes – with clarity and sharpness great enough to help the Dr. Woods determine exactly what’s going on to cause any problems you may be experiencing.
Plus, they use less radiation than traditional x-rays, and that’s a good thing.
Part Of A Program Of Prevention
When we turn to panoramic x-rays instead of bitewings, patients like you are likely to be happier. It’s faster for all of us, and we get better pictures too. These x-rays are also safer. Simply put, there’s no downside to diagnosing your dental health issues with panoramic x-rays.
Panoramic x-rays are one part of a complete program of diagnostic and preventative services available from Brighton Dental here in San Diego. When you, our staff and Dr. Woods work together, it’s possible to preserve more of your natural dental structures and to prevent the onset or worsening of a variety of dental and overall health issues.
