Holistic Dentistry Means We Think You’re A Whole Person
We’re proud to be holistic dentists and proud to treat every patient as a whole person, not just a head with teeth in it.
While we talked a little about dental picks and perhaps a few other things on social media this week, we also showed you a graphic that simply says “We practice Holistic Dentistry.”
And that says a lot.
If you haven’t heard of holistic dentistry, that may be because it goes by several other names, including biological or alternative dentistry or biocompatible dentistry. We’ve even heard it called unconventional dentistry, but we’re not particularly fond of that term. We follow strict standards and conventions, just as other dentists do. Our standards, however, are a bit higher than some.
While other practices may not agree with us on a precise definition of holistic dentistry, there are certainly some common threads. Most of us:
· Oppose using amalgam and instead prefer harmless composite materials for fillings
· Use nonsurgical approaches to gum disease whenever possible
· Don’t like the idea of root canals because they can be bad for your health overall
· And more.
We like one particular definition of holistic dentistry better than all others: It’s a specific approach to taking care of teeth and gums that promotes overall health and wellness and not just the treatment of whatever diseases a patient may have.
We also support the use of good nutrition to reverse dental and degenerative diseases and are in favor of the avoidance of toxic materials in all aspects of dentistry. Plus, we work to correct bite issues before they impact the jaw and overall health and try to prevent and treat gum disease on a biological level rather than just dealing with symptoms.
