The most crucial reason for straightening your teeth if they’re crooked or misaligned is to prevent bigger problems. Of course, there’s a positive cosmetic benefit too. Straight teeth chew and bite better, allow you to speak more precisely and can boost your confidence too.
At Brighton Dental San Diego, we provide orthodontic and cosmetic dental procedures to straighten teeth and provide you a better life. But why bother? If you have an overbite, underbite, crossbite, overcrowding or other orthodontic issues, here are some of the disorders that may plague you until you take action and fix the problem:
Gum disease. Also called periodontitis, gum disease starts with bacteria that causes an infection. Since crooked teeth are hard to clean, debris plus plaque and bacteria can form between teeth and in other places that are hard to clean well with a toothbrush or floss. Having your teeth straightened can make cleaning much easier and dramatically decrease the risk of periodontitis.
TMD. Also called TMJ for the joint involved, this condition of the jaw is painful and can be caused by improper alignment of the jaw. The excruciating symptoms of TMD include generalized headaches, pain in the jaw joint, locking of the jaw and teeth grinding, among others. When your teeth are straight, TMD is still possible, but straightening eliminates one common cause.
Tooth injury. When your teeth are straight, they create a strong wall of protection for each other, meaning individual teeth are less likely to be injured in accidents or during sporting activities. When crooked teeth protrude, they often stand alone, making them vulnerable to injury. Risk-takers and those involved in sports need straight teeth for protection.
Uneven wearing. Crooked teeth can cause some teeth to come together harder than others when chewing or biting. This can cause uneven wearing that doesn’t happen when your teeth are straight. That means having teeth straightened can help save the crooked teeth and those that are already in the right position too.
How Teeth Are Straightened
Today, it’s possible to straighten teeth using orthodontic braces or alignment trays. Braces are brackets attached to either the front or back of teeth that stay in place for months or years. Wires through the brackets are regularly tightened by Dr. Woods, then the brackets and wires are all removed when the treatment is finished. A retainer is usually necessary for months to hold the teeth in place after straightening with braces.
Alignment trays can be removed for cleaning – or a big event you need to attend, for example – and are used when the alignment issues aren’t very severe and the movement of teeth necessary to make them straight isn’t very far. Every few weeks, you simply change to a different tray – each a little closer to the final positioning than the last.
