Smile When You Can, And Never Neglect Your Gums
We’re big fans of big smiles – but we know that dental and periodontal disease can make you not want to smile. This week on social media, we reminded you in several different ways just how important it is to smile.
We even showed you a meme explaining why it’s important to go to the dentist.
One reason you must see a dentist regularly is to prevent, treat and control periodontal disease. Most people have some form of periodontal – or gum – disease, but treatments can cure or dramatically improve the symptoms of this condition that can negatively impact your overall health if left unchecked.
So what are the signs of periodontal disease? As we showed you in a meme, they can include:
· Bad breath
· Loss of appetite
· One or more loose or broken teeth
· Sensitivity around the mouth in any location, and
· Excessive salivation.
The bad breath is from all the bacteria and the decaying tissue in your mouth – plus the food particles that are trapped in your mouth when the disease creates pockets around teeth that hold debris.
You can lose your appetite with gum disease for a variety of reasons, including painfulness that makes you not want to eat.
As you might have guessed, the sensitivity is from damage and irritation.
The salivation is because your mouth is trying to clean itself and heal itself, but the damage is usually more than a little saliva can cure.
