As a biocompatible dental clinic, we’re committed to only using materials proven to be safe and effective – a commitment that not all dentists make. At Brighton Dental, we’re the holistic San Diego dentist office where we make sure the products we use in and on your mouth don’t react with human physiology.
But not all people are the same.
Biocompatibility testing allows us to make absolutely certain that your body won’t react with the products and supplies we use for your dental restorations and other oral care work. If you have chronic pain issues, a compromised immune system or other health concerns, this testing can especially important. But every patient can benefit from biocompatibility testing. When we know what sensitivities you have, we can make smart choices that keep us from putting something in your body that will cause a reaction now or in the future.
An Extensive Panel Of Testing From One Blood Sample
For this remarkable testing, all we need from you is a blood sample, which we can take quickly and often without discomfort. Dr. Woods can help you decide if it’s best for you to have Clifford Materials Reactivity Testing (CMRT) or Biocomp Blood Serum Biocompatibility Testing. The tests are similar, but one may be better than the other in certain circumstances.
In the case of CMRT, the dental panel reports whether you’re sensitive to more than 17,000 name-brand dental products that we may use in our practice. (A separate orthopedic panel from the company may be something you’ll want to have done if you ever need a hip or knee replacement or other orthopedic surgery.)
Specifically, Clifford testing looks at 94 chemical groups and correlates them to a dental materials database. It looks for your body’s reactions many things, including these chemical types and the materials into which they may break down over time:
• Glass ionomers
• Adhesives, cements and bonding agents
• Liner materials
• Cleaning materials
• Pastes and gels
• Porcelains and ceramics
• Non-metallic crown materials
• Root canal materials
• Implant materials
• Impression materials
• Denture materials and adhesives
• Preventative treatments
• Whitening and bleaching agents
• Mouth guards
• Snoring and apnea devices
• And much more.
Our usual product and material choices are made based on overall biocompatibility and the proven abilities of the products to work without reactions. Each product used in dental work has alternatives from other brands and made of different materials, however. If this testing reveals a sensitivity, we can use a different brand or type on you rather than the one we usually use.
Facts About Biocompatibility
Here are some facts about biocompatibility that help you understand how important it is:
• Biocompatibility is defined as not being toxic or injurious to living tissue or causing an immune system response.
• Not all dentists worry about biocompatibility – so some still use harmful metals and other materials in patients’ bodies without special consent.
• Some things cause irritation – an immediate response – while others result in sensitivity, a reaction that may happen gradually.
• Some products may not cause a reaction but break down over time into components that cause a reaction.
• Sterility is different from biocompatibility but is also essential to good outcomes.
With biocompatibility testing from one of the reputable companies we use, we can find out what special sensitivities are unique to your body and physiology and avoid using things that cause a reaction. That can prevent problems in the short-term and the long-term, leading to better outcomes for you than would be possible without testing.
At Brighton Dental, we recommend biocompatibility dental testing. Why wouldn’t you want it?
